Xbox 360, for a game unit. I have both, and enjoy them both, but the 360 gets WAY more use. Plus, if you're looking to play online, xbox live is the way to go as well. It is a $5/month subscription, but if you're going to game online alot it's worth it. You don't have to pay for a subscription just to be able to download most demos, or buy games from xbox arcade though. There's a lot to offer in the online store.
Downsides: Games are $10 more expensive, larger console, charge for full use of online services, reliability is questionable(red ring of death). Plus': Online service is well thought out and has a lot to offer, large selection of games, popular console and thus has more used games for sale. |

The Wii is fun, but I've found it to be more fun as a party game platform. I tried The Force Unleashed on it once and it was pretty weak.
I have a 360 and love it. So far no problems with RROD, but people who have had that have also reported getting fast service on returns. Others have said it took forever. 360 games are a lot of fun and if you're just getting into it the way I am (I've only had mine about a year), there's a TON of older games that will be dirt cheap at Gamestop (used) that you can pick up and play. For example, I played through Conan. This is a game I'd NEVER have paid full price for, but for $10 was a fantastic bargain. Even with the cheap boss fights. :) The 360 is also expanding its capacity to operate as a multimedia platform. I have Netflix and hooked my Netflix account to the 360, so now I can watch anything in my Instant Queue. They just started their Zune service, which apparently lets you buy music/movies/TV shows. I haven't tried it, but I've bought TV show episodes on the Xbox before and they looked fine. If you go with the Xbox, get the annual Xbox Live Gold subscription. Amazon sells them pretty cheap ($35 a piece?) and Wal-Mart online has cards for like $30 sometimes. You can carry up to three years of service on your account, so if you can drop $90 today, you'll be saving at least $60 in the future (full price is usually $50 a year -- and that's assuming they never raise the price). I just did that recently, and I'm stoked about it. Anyway, I love the 360. I still prefer the PC as a control scheme (mouse + keyboard is the best), and the PC still does flight sims better (although I haven't tried IL-2 on the 360 with the Ace Combat flight stick and throttle....), but the 360 is just a solid platform for gaming. The only thing you can't do really is mods (game mods, I mean -- although modding the console itself is also a no-no these days).
